Hey šŸ˜ Welcome back to my blogā¤ļø

Last time I talked about some basic facts about hair and today Iā€™ll be talking about Hair Classification šŸ˜Š

There are various systems used to classify curl pattern and being knowledgeable of your hair type is a good start to knowing how to take care of your hair. šŸ˜ƒšŸ¤©

Hair can be classified by-

1. Andre walker system- It classifies hair into: Straight, wavy, curly and kinky.

Type 1- Straight hair. It reflects the most sheen and also the most resilient. It is hard to damage and difficult to curl.

Type 2- Wavy hair. Itā€™s texture and sheen ranges between straight and curly hair. Wavy hair is also more likely to become frizzy than straight hair.

Type 3- Curly hair. Known to have an S pattern. This hair type is usually voluminous and prone to damage.

Type 4- Kinky. It features a tightly coiled curl pattern that is often fragile with a very high density. This type of hair shrinks when wet.

2. FIA system- This method classifies the hair by curl pattern, hair strand thickness and overall hair volume.

Based on curliness

  • Straight

  • Wavy

2a- Loose with stretched S waves.

2b- Shorter with more distinct S waves.

2c- Distinct S waves with some spiral curling.

  • Curly

3a- Big loose spiral curls.

3b- Bouncy ringlets.

3c- Tight corkscrews.

  • Very (ā€œReallyā€) curly

4a- Tightly coiled S curl

4b- Z patterned (tightly coiled, sharply angled)

4c- Mostly Z-patterned (tightly kinked, less definition)

Based on strands

  • Fine- Feels ultra fine or silk.

  • Medium- Feels stiff or rough.

  • Coarse- Thick strand.

Based on volume

By circumference of full hair ponytail

  • Thin- less than 2 inches (5cm).

  • Normal-from 2-4 inches (5-10cm)

  • Thick- more than 4 inches (10cm)
